Little Man's First day of Headstart

I'm really behind on my posts, I'm doing my best to catch up but we are in the middle of moving.

Little Man is starting school this year and he is very excited. I was incredibly nervous because he is only three and he is the youngest in the class. But he is doing very well. His teachers are so nice and they help him any way that they can.

He has gotten so much better with his numbers and colors. I'm so proud of him! Here are some pictures of his first day!

This was his first assignment that he had to bring to school with him on the first day. He put all of his favorite things on his page, pirates, cookies, cookie monster, mickey mouse and monsters

DIY Scratch Art

My kids love scratch art, but it never seems to last very long. So I did some research to see if we could make our own instead of spending countless amounts of money on the scratch art pages. I found a few different ways to make it but this one seems like its the best one.

What you will need:

  • White paper
  • Crayons
  • Black Paint
  • Dish Soap
  • Paint Brush
Have your children color COMPLETLEY over the entire page. Make sure they press down pretty hard to cover the page with the wax from the crayons

Bright colors are best so when they are seen next to the black the colors pop

Then mix your paint with a little dish soap (not too much soap or the black will be flakey) using your paint brush.

Then you just let it dry. You can use toothpicks, chopsticks, or we are going to use cotton swabs with the tip cut off.

We made several sheets so if one of the kids finishes a project early they can get one out and scratch away! They is also a cool project coming up where we use some of these sheets! So keep checking back!!!

Making Art Portfolios

The kids asked me if we could start doing art classes everyday. So I thought that our first project should be something to put all of our art work into.

After digging through our cardboard recycling, I found 4 Digiorno pizza boxes. These boxes are pretty large so papers of many sizes would fit into it.

I started by opening the boxes completley, but leaving the side where the box just folds over (not where you can tear it open) intact.

We then painted our boxes. Sorry I didn't take any pictures.

Then I cut off the extra cardboard that was on the top. and closed the box (it should have an opening at the top.

I punched two hold in each side of the box, put string and beads on it to add some flare.

After that was done I took a hot glue gun and glued the sides so it was sturdier. Then I puched two holes in the top so we could attach handles.

We used pipe cleaners for the hanldes

Snow globes

When I was little my mom made me and my sister cute little snow globe water bottles and I wanted to try it now that I have kids.

Instead of using a water bottle I used old pickle jars.

I let the kids paint the lids of their jars before we did anything else.

Little Princess (of course) used pink and black for her lid.

Sissy used blue, then painted it over black, then added little pink-black spots

Little Man used blue and green

The lids once they were finished. Little Mans reminds me of a globe!

We filled the jars up 3/4 the way with corn syrup and then we added a little bit of food coloring (not too much or it will get really dark and hard to see into) and some glitter.

If we would of had some little confetti type pieces I think they would have been even cooler. Maybe next time we will try it. We also thought about glueing a cute little toy to the top but we love our toys lol!

After they were done the kids put them in their windows so the sun would shine through them and make their rooms sparkle!

After a few months the food coloring went away, the snowglobes are clear now. I'm not sure if its because of the sun or if its just the food coloring.

Puppet Theater

I've been wanting to try this but didn't have a box that would really work for it. But the other day my mom was cleaning out her garage and found a box that a table had come in and I thought it would be perfect!

It had a lot of tape on it, so I pulled as much of it off as I could. Then I took a box knife and cut a square out of the top part of the box so that Little Man could stand and be seen (when he puts on shows he will be sitting).

Next I painted it. Added some trim and Little Man played away! I made two because the girls wanted one too after they saw Little Mans! I didn't take these after pictures right away, they have been playing with them for about a year. Here they are!

This one is the girls, they are a little rough so it looks beat up lol

Little Man wouldn't let me take a picture of his theater without him in it

Dry Erase Book

Little Man has a Sesame Street workbook where he can learn colors, numbers, and the alphabet. I love these books, I would buy every single one that I see if I could (but they aren't too cheap). I wanted him to be able to enjoy it for a long time so I decided to make it into a dry erase book that he could practise with over and over.

What you will need:
  • Activity/Work Book
  • Sheet Protector
  • 3 Ring Binder
  • Dry Erase Marker
  • Cloth (to clean)

This is very simple and you can use any type of book that you find. The Sesame street book that we have has perforated pages so they were easy to rip out. I ripped out as many pages as I had sheet protectors.

I then placed the pages into the sheet protectors in the same order as they were in the book.

Then you just place them in your binder.

Little Man loves this and its a cheap and easy way to help your little one learn.

You could even do this with older kids, doing math or even learning a new language. There are countless websites on the internet where you can print FREE activity pages that you could also put in your childs book.

These books would be great on car trips or rainy days.
