I started out tracing some Sesame Street characters out of Little Mans coloring book. I used printer paper and a pencil, then I retraced over it with a marker to make the outline really stand out.
Then I colored the pictures
Then I cut out the pictures and laminated them using do-it-yourself laminating sheets. Then I cut them out again
Then I decided to use Thomas the Tank Engine as the leader of the train. I know Sesame Street and Thomas don't go together but Little Man is in love with both of them and he will love playing with them.
Then on to making the actual train. I used construction paper in different colors for the different train cars. You take the biggest character or animal or whatever you decided to use (soon we are going to make Mickey Mouse ones!) and measure the size of the car you will need. But be sure to leave a little extra space on the sides for when you have to glue them together. You need to make sure the car comes up high enough on the character so he "sits" in the car.
Cut enough cars for all of your characters to sit in. Once you have all of your cars you can cut out your wheels. I alternated small wheels and big wheels so Little Man can see the difference between big and little.
Then glue your wheels onto the bottoms of the trains. Next you will need to connect your train cars together. I used slips of scrap construction paper, I alternated the colors so I didn't use the same color on the cars. You just glue them on the insides of the cars.
Next I glued all of the cars shut by gluing the sides. After all the glue dries you can decorate the cars. I used a stencil and wrote the names of the colors on the cars (Always find time for a lesson!).
But as soon as I figure out how I want to put it up I will post pictures!! Tape doesn't stick to Little Man's wall for some reason so I'm brainstorming other ways to put it up without damaging the train or the wall... :)
